    • President Robbie Wiggins welcomed all and called the meeting to order at 7 pm (members began arriving at 6 pm to eat).  Ray Sparks delivered the invocation, and the president led the group in the Pledge.

    • The minutes were distributed by Secretary Larry Brown and accepted as presented. Treasurer Lewis Southern presented the treasurer’s report of $390.08 in checking and $34.54 in the share account.

    • Ray Sparks introduced the speaker, Sgt. Bob Riley of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Department.  Sgt. Riley explained a program for driver education that he has been involved with in Catawba County.  He explained the need for follow-up with students after receiving their permits.  Research had indicated the need with a growing population and increased teen accidents.  A simple comparison with 40 students who completed the course using the Defensive Driving Course Four (DDC4) and 40 random students showed reduced citations and accidents.  Emphasis continues to be placed on defensive driving techniques to develop more confidence, and familiarization with law enforcement procedures.  The program is now offered through the community college.

    • President Wiggins reported that we have 39 life members and 96 members (87 active) of the 564 in the state association.  He appointed Ray Wyatt, Gary Davis, and Chuck Lehning to the nominating committee to present a slate at the March 6, 2006 meeting (same place, same time).

    • Gary Davis reported on state activities: $5 cut in appropriations due to reversions and low bids; letter to state expressing concerns about increased cost due to gas prices; call for state awards or offices; State Conference at Hilton Riverside (910-763-5900) on March 31- April 1 with early-bird workshop and cruise on the 30th; NC had 89 in Hawaii for the national (2nd most to host); state association attendance has been excellent.  Karl Logan spoke about the Southeast Conference at Myrtle Beach on February 24-25 at the Sea Mist and a new DVD developed by DEI
